NBO History

Nu Beta Omega was chartered as a graduate chapter January 26, 1980 in Clearwater, Florida under the leadership of the South Atlantic Regional Director, Delores Ham Oliver.  The chapter has been an integral part of the Clearwater Community in the delivery of programs and educational activities. Vivian Henry, an initiate of the Beta Alpha Chapter at Florida A&M University initiated the effort to establish in her hometown a chapter of the first Greek letter sorority for African American women. The trailblazers who chartered a path for the inception along with Vivian Henry the visionary of the group included Beverly Campbell, Shirley Barlow, Joyce Nelson, Eleanor Breland, Wanda Lester, Portia Jackson, Judy Davis, Ann Bell, Dorothy Bailey, Lola Allen, Alyce Bennett, Janice Gibbs, Theresa Goss, Marva Lane, Beatrice Lewis, Clayvonne McElrath, Ann McLin, Debra Paige, and Dorothy Thompson.  As Nu Beta Omega Chapter celebrates 40 years, it is poised and ready to deliver greater service to the Clearwater community. This small group of exceptionally talented, college-educated African American women is committed to continuing to serve all mankind.

Nu Beta Omega Chapter continues the dedication and commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. which focus on scholarships such as: Beverly Robinson Campbell Memorial Scholarship, Vivian Lester Henry Memorial Scholarship, HBCU and STEM Scholarships. To continue to strengthen the pearls that bind our sisterhood we participate in yearly activities such as retreats, reclamation activities, sisterly outings, and celebrating Founders’ Day. Achievements the chapter has received includes, completing standards reports timely, Membership retention small chapter, EAF, Cluster Attendance small chapters, and the Cluster II Spirit award. Currently, Nu Beta Omega has 26 active Sorors to include 2 Golden soror, 12 silver sorors, and 9 life members. Nu Beta Omega partnered with the Omicron Beta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County to form our non-profit Youth Development Initiatives (YDI) founded in 2000 to provide a structural program for adolescents, ages 10-18, with a special emphasis on recruitment and intake of youth at the 6th grade level. Under our non-profit Nu Beta Omega signature program Precious Pearls along with Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Institute our focus is to enhance the participants self-esteem, education, leadership skills, and cultural awareness. The participants have experienced such activities as educational trips, college tours, Judicial Forums, leadership development workshops and STREAM with an emphasis on Technology and Robotics.

Nu Beta Omega provides multiple programs and services to address the needs of the local community based on our 2018-2022 International Program Targets. Our first Target HBCU for Life: A Call to Action offers enriching experiences for the YDI students that include HBCU college tours. Our international program #CAP we have supported over 130 seniors as they seek admission to college by providing guidance and support in completing the application and enrollment process. Women’s health care and wellness international program target focus on critical healthcare of African American women. Our program “Stepping into Heart Healthy Inheritance” captured Pink Goes Red initiatives as Nu Beta Omega brought the community together to capture the strength of women sharing wisdom gained from battles with heart disease.  Under this program target we also showed attention to caregivers as they brought their loved ones to medical appointments by showering them with flowers and care giver brochures. Our building economic legacy international target allowed Nu Beta Omega to partner with Wells Fargo to show our participants in YDI the importance of building financial and economic wealth.  Our International Art Target provided an opportunity to highlight our Pinellas County African American Museum by celebrating, “An Evening at the Museum” A Salute to the Arts and the Harlem Renaissance.   Focusing on our International Target Global Impact Days we garnished over 250 shoes for Soles for Souls, 360 eyeglasses to the Lion’s Club and 153 Dresses to countries in need. We also impact our community by participating in MLK Day of service, cleaning and refreshing our community playground and our historical African American Museum. Our annual Participation in AKA Day at the Capitol brought forth information that allows us to have a presence in the community by providing information on the importance of voting, Consensus 2020, clarifications on laws affecting our communities and  letter writing campaigns.  Nu Beta Omega annual Gospel Celebration and  Tri-Greek Fundraiser, Boots and Bling has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships for the Clearwater Community.
